The missing ingredient is almost always shading.

Many beginners treat shading as an afterthought—a bit of scribbling here and there to add texture. But shading is actually about form. It’s how you tell the viewer’s brain that this circle is actually a sphere, or that this rectangle is a cylinder. It’s about translating the physics of light into pencil marks.

If you skip the fundamentals of how light works, no amount of fancy pencil technique will save the drawing. Let’s break down the physics into something manageable.

The Golden Rule: One Light Source

Before your pencil even touches the paper to shade, you have to make a decision: Where is the light coming from?

In the real world, light bounces around everywhere. But when you are learning, that’s way too complicated. To learn form, you need to simplify. You need one single, dominant light source like the sun or a lamp.

If you don’t decide where the light is, you won’t know where the shadows go. If you don’t know where the shadows go, your drawing will look confused and flat.

The Anatomy of Light and Shadow

When that single light source hits an object (let’s stick to the classic sphere for now), it creates predictable zones. You need to know these four terms:

  1. The Highlight: The brightest spot on the object where the light hits most directly. This is usually pure white paper.
  2. The Midtones (or Halftones): The area transitioning from the light side toward the shadow side. This is where most of your drawing happens.
  3. The Core Shadow: The darkest part of the object itself. This is the band where the object turns completely away from the light. It is not at the very edge of the object.
  4. Reflected Light: This is the secret sauce of realism. Light bounces off the table or ground back onto the shadowed side of the object. It means the very edge of the shadow side is actually slightly lighter than the core shadow. Beginners almost always miss this, making their objects look pasted onto the paper.
  5. Cast Shadow: The shadow the object throws onto the ground or nearby surfaces. This is usually the darkest value in your entire drawing, right underneath the object.

The Tool: The Value Scale

Knowing where the shadows go is half the battle. The other half is putting down the right amount of dark.

“Value” in art just means how light or dark something is. A value scale is a chart showing steps from pure white to pure black.

Most beginners only use three values: white paper, a frantic mid-grey scribble, and a hard black outline. To get realistic form, you need to control the in-between greys.

Quick Exercise: Draw a long rectangle and divide it into 5 squares. Leave the first one white. Make the last one as black as your pencil can go. Now, try to fill the middle three squares with even steps of grey to bridge the gap. It’s harder than it looks!

Putting It Together: The Sphere Exercise

This is the classic art school exercise for a reason. If you can shade a convincing sphere, you can eventually shade a face, an arm, or a tree trunk. They are all just complex combinations of basic forms.

  1. Draw a circle. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect. Lightly indicate where your light is coming from (e.g., top right).
  2. Map the shadows. Lightly sketch an oval shape on the bottom left for the cast shadow. Lightly map out where the core shadow band will be on the sphere itself.
  3. Fill the shadows. Fill in the cast shadow (on the ground) with a dark value. Fill in the shadow side of the sphere with a medium-dark value.
  4. Build the core shadow. Darken that band you mapped out earlier. Remember, this should be darker than the rest of the shadow side, but leave a little rim of lighter value at the very edge for that reflected light.
  5. Transition the midtones. Gently shade from the core shadow toward the light source, pressing lighter and lighter until you reach the white paper of the highlight.

3 Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

Even with the theory down, it’s easy to mess up in practice. Here is what I usually see when reviewing beginner work.

1. Pillow Shading

This is the most common offender. This happens when you darken the edges of everything and leave the center bright, making every object look like a fluffy pillow. It looks wrong because real light rarely hits objects dead-center from the front. Always define a light source direction.

2. Being Afraid of the Dark

Many beginners are timid with their pencils. Their “darkest” shadows are just a polite medium grey. If you don’t have deep darks, your lights won’t look bright by contrast. Push your pencil harder in the cast shadows and core shadows. Contrast creates drama and depth.

3. Inconsistent Lighting

You shade the nose as if the light is from the right, but shade the cheek as if the light is from the left. This confuses the viewer’s brain and breaks the illusion of reality. Once you pick a light source, stick to it for every element in the drawing.
